Five Ways to Support a 9-Year-Old’s Development

Hi, I’m Olu. As a mom, a grandma, and someone with over 15 years of experience working with children, I want to share my advice for supporting a 9-year-old’s growth. In my years of raising my own children and working in childcare, I’ve learned how crucial this stage is for shaping their development. Here are five ways you can make a positive impact:

  1. Encourage Positive Self-Talk
At this age, children can be really hard on themselves and their peers. They often say negative things about themselves and their abilities. As a parent, you can help them develop confidence by encouraging positive self-talk. Remind them to speak kindly to themselves, and model this behavior in your own life. It makes a huge difference in building their self-esteem.
  2. Monitor Social Media and YouTube Content
Children at 9 are increasingly exposed to social media, and platforms like YouTube can be addictive. It’s important to monitor what they’re watching and ensure it’s age-appropriate. Consider setting up parental controls on YouTube Kids to create a safer online environment for your child.
  3. Support Their Academic Journey with Study Routines
At this age, school tests can feel like a big deal. Many children fear failure and stress over schoolwork. Help them manage this by establishing a consistent study routine at home. This support not only prepares them for tests but also teaches time management and responsibility.
  4. Model Positive Body Talk
As puberty starts to set in around age nine, both boys and girls are undergoing significant body changes. As a parent, it’s important to model positive body talk. Be mindful of how you speak about bodies, both your own and others’. This helps children develop a healthy body image and embrace their changing selves.
  5. Encourage Exploration of Hobbies and Interests
At this age, children may be quick to give up on things they don’t immediately like or understand. Encourage them to try new activities and explore their hobbies. Whether it’s sports, art, or something else, support their interests and let them know that failure is part of the learning process.

By taking these steps, you can guide your child through the challenges of this age and foster their emotional and social growth.
