As we all know parents are children’s first teachers.
I had a conversation with a close friend of mine the other day and she was complaining to me about her 5-year-old. “He does not recognise any numbers and he doesn’t like maths,” she said.
My first question to her was, have you been supporting him at home with math?
Her excuse was that she was too busy.
So I said, spending 10 minutes with him daily would go a long way.
Are you a parent/carer of young children between the ages of 4 and 5, today’s post is for you.
If you want your kids to do well in school you need to support them at home. Teachers can’t do everything!
HERE ARE SOME PRACTICAL TIPS ON HELPING KIDS WITH MATH:
🖍COUNTING AS YOU GO – Practice Chanting numbers one to ten and encourage your child to join in with you. You can also practice counting numbers when they are going up or down on the stairs, or when walking home or in the car.
🖍FIND HOW MANY: counting and touching the object to find how many. For example; – “How many cars can you see?” “How many buttons are on your jacket?
🖍 RECOGNIZING NUMBERS: point out numbers wherever you see them: on buses and houses, on pages of books, on birthday cards and so on.
The bottom line here is to try to make it fun and please don’t force them when they are tired. Remember they are still very young.
